ISRAEL IN EGYPT
with the Freiburger Barockorchester, René Jacobs conductor
H
andel's oratorio Israel in Egypt can be called a "baroque blockbuster" without exaggeration. His setting of the Old Testament account of the Israelites' exodus from Egypt could not be more vivid. A firework of choral literature!
At the latest when the famous plagues are thematized, it becomes clear why Handel is considered one of the best dramatists of all time. One did not even need the oratorio text to know exactly what the music is about. René Jacobs is the ideal conductor for this composition. With his dramaturgical sensitivity, his meticulous research and his sense of timing, he can show himself entirely as the director of such an epic.
