fter studying Social Sciences and English at the University of Latviathe Latvian soprano Gunta Smirnova chose to pursue a musician’s career specializing in baroque singing. During her studies at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis(Evelyn Tubb and Ulrich Messthaler)she gainedrich experience in historical performance practise.The young soprano continued her studies at the Academy of Arts Zurichwith Lina Maria Akerlund, as well as in mastercourses and private lessons with Andreas Scholl, Jean-Paul Fouchecourt, Yvonne Naef, Isolde Siebert, Jane Thorner, Karen Brunssen and Stefan Haselhoff.
As a demanded concert soloist Gunta Smirnova performs regularly in Switzerland and abroad. She has sang with orchestras and ensembles like Tonhalle Orchester Zürich,Musikkollegium Winterthur, Venice Baroque Orchestra, La Cetra, La Scintilla and worked with such conductors as Andrea Marcon, Joshua Rifkin, Ton Koopmann and Sigvards Klava.
Gunta Smirnova has also performed several opera roles: Belinda in Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas, diverse roles in Purcell’s King Arthurand Fairy Queen, Penelope in Scarlattis Penelope la castaas well Musica in Monteverdi’s L’Orfeoand Mlle de Kirkabon in Grétry’s Le Huron.
At the Opera House Basel Gunta Smirnova interpreted the roles of Euridice (Monteverdi L’Orfeo) and Vagaus (Vivaldi Juditha Triumphans) – both under the baton of Andrea Marcon. She also participated in the new-production of Heinz Holliger’ opera Luneain the Opera House Zürich in spring 2018.
The CD-recording of Bach’s Christmas Oratorio(Ensemble Musica Fiorita, Daniela Dolci) with Gunta Smirnova singing the soprano arias has been released in autumn 2018 under the lable PAN CLASSICS.
